Discover the power couples of colour from nature's heroes to pop duos

Choice is a great thing, and we’re firm believers that when it comes to choosing the right colours for you, the most important thing is how a palette makes you feel and connect with the space, so it’s well worth giving it some consideration.

Colour can be a preference, and more often than not a gut instinct, but your favourite colour might not always be the best choice for a space. When deciding a colour scheme for your walls there are a few things to bear in mind, such as the size of the room, lighting conditions, as well as the room’s purpose. A space dedicated to play will have different colour needs to a room designed for sleep. That’s why we’ve spent a lot of time curating not only an inspiring selection of artwork, but a special edit of hand painted frame finishes, selected from the Little Greene Paint Company’s palette of interior focussed tones. So you can choose a finish that harmoniously matches your scheme and expresses who you are.

So where do you start? Whilst the rules are always there to be broken, these colour power couples are a great place to begin.

Natures Heroes

Imagine dusty pink roses against leafy greens, or yellow gold sands against a blue sky. The russet leaves of autumn against the moss and grass underfoot. These are the time old colour pairings epitomising the comfort of nature and those idyllic days to remember. Go bright and saturated for an energising space, or subtle and muted to induce calm.

Neutral Chameleons

Versatile and timeless, the right neutral can be dressed up with a slice of colour, provide the grounding touch against a brighter palette, or create sleek paired back schemes. Our favourite way to use neutrals is to introduce multiple layers to create texture and interest in a sophisticated way. Introduce an off black frame against warm white walls for a paired back monochrome scheme.

Pop Duos

A great way to introduce bold colours is to seek out contrasting and complementing tones that sit just apart from the bright primary shades, to achieve a playful, yet considered, result. Place a lavender purple against a hay yellow, wine red with sunrise blue, complement a dusty pink with a burnt orange or a sea green with gold yellow. The combinations are endless and it’s an opportunity to create a uniquely playful space.

Heritage Cocoon

The enduring appeal of heritage tones make the perfect colour drenched cocoon for a bijou cosy space to retreat into. Tonal greens, blues, purples and darker neutrals can layer well in smaller spaces to give depth to invite you in. Add a third complementary colour for glints of tonal highlights for a jewel box effect.

 Subvert the stereotypes

There’s nothing wrong with pink and blue, but those gender stereotypes can be tricky to escape. So if you’re looking for alternatives, introducing colour combinations can be a great way to add character to a space without defaulting to subliminal conformity. Pair a pastel tone with its more saturated contrasting opposite, or bring in multiple dashes of striking colours against a neutral backdrop.
