Alice Bowsher on her creative world and the enduring appeal of The Muppets!

Alice is an illustrator and children's book author known for her joyful characters created in black ink. You might have come across her work out and about on billboards or within books and products, including ‘My First Green Cookbook’, written by Bake Off’s David Atherton and her bespoke greetings cards for contemporary stationery store Wrap. In this interview, Alice takes us on a whistle stop tour of her creative world, sharing her childhood inspirations and revealing the enduring appeal of The Muppets on her life!

Are you a morning or evening person?

Morning!

Homebody or social butterfly?

A social butterfly who likes to be comfy.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Trips. Whether it’s a big trip to another place or a small trip to a supermarket, it’s all an adventure. I also get inspired by learning about how my favourite artists/makers work and spend their time.

What does creative freedom mean to you?

Having time and space to make a mess and learn from mistakes. It’s also keeping an open mind so you are open to exploring everything.

What visual item or moment from your childhood has stuck with you, shaping the artist you are today?

I talk about it all the time, but moving to Texas when I was 8 really changed everything for me. That and watching Kermit the frog perform ‘Once In A Lifetime’ on The Muppets Tonight.

What do you listen to while you work?

At the moment, when I need to concentrate it’s Nala Sinephro.

How do you like to switch off?

I like to sleep.

If you had to choose 2 colours to work with for ever more, what would they be?

A very deep black and a very bright red.
