Introducing Enikő Eged

Budapest-based illustrator Eniko Eged creates wonderful worlds inspired by memory, emotion and folk art. Her work is recognisable for its bold graphic forms, expressive pattern and playful use of colour.

We spoke to Enikő about her dinosaur collection for Mini Editions, and her love for animals.

How would you describe your work?

I like to create a feeling of familiarity, exploring the connections between emotions and memories with drawings, often with animals. A recurring motif for me is horses. I love horses so much! I have horses at home, and I love cats, dogs, cattle, ducks and almost every kind of animal.

Why did you want to create a collection featuring dinosaurs?

Personally, I love dinos. It’s hard to find dinosaur artwork that goes beyond the stereotypical, classic dino illustrations, and so I wanted to create some in my own style. I draw many animals (+ I've had messages from followers requesting dinosaurs!) and it's great to add some prehistoric ones to the collection!

Images of dinosaurs are deeply fixed in our collective imagination in a certain way. Where did you begin to reinterpret something so familiar?

The way I would usually draw goes beyond reality. It's my own version, an expression of the way I feel rather than reflecting convention. That's what I wanted to do here. I started by imagining friendly dinos with magical patterns :)

How do you think children will respond to your dinosaur prints?

I hope they will find them cool and fun :) and that the dinos will encourage them to invent or draw animals with any colours or patterns they wish, feeling free to use their creative imagination.

Do you have a visual item or moment from your childhood that has stuck with you, shaping the artist you are today?

I have a lot, so it’s hard to choose. I have two younger brothers, and we played a lot with small plastic dinos as children. I loved them so much. My recurring animal themes were the same back then as they are now.

Was there someone who encouraged you to make art when you were young?

My whole family encouraged me. I just have this need to draw almost everyday and I'm happy I have the confidence to share my art with others. Although I am a little shy, and sometimes surprised to see how many people like to choose my illustration to decorate their home!
